Running Events vs. Field Events
By: Nicky Wubben

Track is a sport for many types of people whether you are muscular, or built for running. So while some people are muscular and built for field events, some were built to be sprinters or have stamina for long distance races.
Running events focus on building endurance. To do this, runners need to practice multiple sprints per day to build stamina and endurance needed to race. Runners that only do running events usually have a smaller build. When running a sprint like the 100m, 200m, 400m, and others, runners use starting blocks. Starting blocks are used to position your feet to help you get a faster start.
Running events usually go at a much faster pace and get done faster. There are some races in which you run with teammates, these events are: the 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400, and 4x800 where four people run one at a time and hand off the baton to the next person on their team after they run the required distance.
Field events require athletes to do more bodybuilding by lifting weights every other day. Weight lifting everyday is not healthy and will do more harm than good. Normally, athletes in field events such as shot put or discus have a bigger build while athletes in long jump, high jump, and pole vault have a smaller build. Usually, at track meets, the field events take a longer period of time. Sometimes field events are done in cafeteria style. Cafeteria style is a method in which the athletes go in any order but have to tell the person running the event their name.
There are both differences and similarities in Track. At practice both events require athletes to participate in sprinting to keep fit and in shape. All of the events in track require much practice. At practice and at meets, it is important to keep your muscles warm. To do this, athletes stretch. Both field events and running events require you to. To help the athletes attain grip with their feet they use special shoes called spikes. This helps the person to go a little faster on the track.
Both of these events are fun and unique in their own way. Whether you are a sprinter, long distance runner or are built for field events, you can find some event that fits you.

Celebration Essay

Celebration Essay
By: Nicky Wubben

One person who has inspired me is my sister, Briana. She is a very good role model for me to follow.
Briana, now at 20, is currently attending Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa. She is involved in Track and is surrounded in a Christian environment at all times. When I become that age, I would like to attend Dordt College also.  I would like to go to Dordt College because it has a Christian based education, Christian people would also influence me.
Briana has always taught me to do my best in whatever I do and made me want to strive to do my best.
My sister has always done well in track. Ever since she started track when she was a sophomore in high school, she has always made me want to do better.
Whenever my sister comes home for a visit, she always brings home something new to try. One time when she came home, she brought home some fabric. She said we were going to make headbands. We had a lot of fun together. Another time, we bought some picture frames and cut out things in magazines and put them on the picture frames. She always has fun ideas. We also take a lot of random pictures; like jumping off of hay bails, climbing on the corn dryer, and lots of others. We always have a fun time together.
In all, when I grow up I hope that my life mirrors my sisters.  Now in track I try to use the tips that she gave me to try to be better.  I hope I can also be a good role model to others.

T.V. Use
By: Nicky Wubben

Many of us wonder if T.V. use is positively or negatively affecting our
lives today. The average person watches about 28 hours of T.V. per week in the U.S. Whereas in Finland, the average person watches about 18 hours per week.
The most watched T.V. show in the U.S. is “American Idol.” The next watched show is “NCIS.” When we watch these shows we never really think how they can affect us. If we watch American Idol, some viewers could take it as the person who wins become their idol. Or if a child watches a violent show, such as “NCIS,” the child is probably more likely to act more violently.
Children who watch violent T.V. shows are more likely to be more aggressive. For example, on “NCIS” when they show how the person died, it can be very violent at times. Some parents nowadays leave their children home alone with the T.V. as their “babysitter.” Children don’t always make the best decisions as to what T.V. channel to watch. In the 1950s less bad language was allowed than in today’s times.
In “I Love Lucy” they wouldn’t let them use the word pregnant, but on today’s T.V. shows and movies they have bad language and sex scenes, even in PG movies. Although a lot of it is bad, there are still some good educational channels.  For example; “Animal Planet” and the “History Channel.”
I think that T.V. can negatively influence and pollute the minds of children. There are some movies that no kids should ever see. There should be more strict rules on PG movies. I also think parents should be more aware of what their kids are watching. They could block channels that they don’t believe their children should be watching. Maybe if parents did this more the world would be a little less violent.

Finding Shey
By Nicky

I am Raelee Kay Daines; I have sandy blonde hair and grey-blue eyes. I live in Maraeus, Michigan. It is a suburban town and heavily wooded. My story begins on May 23.
Something has happened to my little sister, Shey. I should’ve noticed the signs earlier. She hadn't been acting like herself since my parent’s big fight. Divorce wasn’t an option for them but I don’t think Shey knew that. These past few days she has been reserved, she didn’t talk or eat much. I confronted her about this but she just shrugged and went to her room. I didn’t think she would take it as far as she did.
The next morning I got up, did the usual, and walked downstairs for breakfast. I was puzzled by Shey’s absence because she has never missed breakfast before and didn’t have anything going on that day or she would have told me where she was. I go upstairs to see if she is still asleep only to see her bed made and her gone. I look around for a note. None. I go outside to check if she might be out there. I don’t see her but I do see my neighbor, Jace.
Jace and I have never really gotten along well. He has shaggy brown hair, bright green eyes and is the hot, popular, star football quarterback and with me being far away from popularity; I think now you can see why we don’t get along. Well, anyway, I saw Jace across the fence and went over to talk to him.
“Hey Jace have you seen Shey at all today?”
He replied with “No, why did you lose her?”
“Haha, very funny.” I growled at him and stormed back inside my house.
I decided to call my mom and ask her if she knew where Shey was. She said that she didn’t know where she was but that I shouldn’t worry. Well, I did worry because I knew something was up with Shey. But I told my mom that I wouldn’t worry, told her I loved her and hung up. I was left with the question: where was Shey?
I made the decision to go looking for Shey. I left a note so my parents wouldn’t worry. I went outside and saw Jace still standing there. I went up to him because I was so desperate.
I asked him, “Could you drive me around town to look for Shey?”
He asked,”Why do you need to find her?”
I replied, “Because I think she’s done something stupid.”
Jace sighed, “Give me one good reason why I should help, she probably just went somewhere with her friends.”
“You don’t understand, Shey tells me everything so why wouldn’t she tell me where she was going?”
“Fine, but I will stay in the car so people don’t see me with you.”  Jace  grumbled.
Jerk, I mumbled to myself. “ “Well let’s get going then.”
We got in his car which was a bright red camaro and took off. We stopped everywhere I could think of that Shey might be. I was exhausted by the time I got home. I thanked Jace for the ride and went into the house feeling very depressed that we hadn’t found Shey.
“Where were you!!!?”  my mom cried, “First this morning I get a call from you saying Shey’s gone and then when I got home you were also gone!”
“I’m sorry mom, didn’t you see the note I left on the counter?”
“No I didn’t see anything on the counter!”  my mother exclaimed.
“ Oh, it must have have floated off when you walked by.”
“Do you think Shey will come back soon? I asked Mom.
“I sure hope so” my mother sighed, “ When your Father gets home we’ll see what we can do.”
I went to my room to think about ways I could find Shey. I noticed my shade was pulled down which was odd because I don’t usually have it down. and I don’t recall pulling it down today so I  went over to check it out and when I pulled it up I saw a note taped to my window.
iF yOu eVeR waNT to SeeE yOur SisTer aLIve aGaiN
I suGGesT You kEep yoUr nOsE ouT Of my bUisNEss.
I screamed and felt myself getting dizzy and suddenly all I could see was black.
I woke up to see Jace standing over me with the note in his hand with a confused and shocked look on his face.
“What’s going on? I heard a scream.”  Jace asked me.
I just started to cry and ran to Jace and cried in his arms. He was shocked at first but then put his arms around me and held me till I was done.
“Whatever is going on I will be there for you.” Jace said tenderly. I fell asleep knowing that whatever we were going to go through to find Shey, Jace was going to be by my side.
